Open Source 101 · For Decision-Makers

You're not against subscriptions. You're against subscriptions you can't walk away from.

Open source is the most misunderstood term in enterprise IT — and the misunderstanding is expensive. This page explains the concept in plain language, kills the myths, shows the honest trade-offs, and compares the three licensing models competing for your infrastructure budget.

What open source actually means

Open-source software is software whose source code is publicly available, and whose license grants you the permanent right to run it, study it, modify it, and redistribute it. Nobody can revoke that right, raise its price, or retire it at a renewal meeting.

It is not a hobby movement — it is the operating model of modern computing. The internet's servers, the cloud providers themselves, every Android device, and the world's supercomputers run on open source. When you migrate from a proprietary hypervisor to Proxmox VE or XCP-ng, you are not stepping off the mainstream. You are stepping onto it.

What changes commercially is exactly one thing: the software itself stops being the product you rent. What you pay for instead — if you choose — is expertise: deployment, integration, and a support SLA. That is our business, and we believe it is the only honest subscription in infrastructure: one you keep paying because it keeps earning its fee, not because your VMs are hostages.

Five misconceptions, corrected

"Open source means free, and free means unsupported."

Reality → Open source means the software license is free and the code is public. Enterprise support is a separate, deliberate choice — vendors like Proxmox, iXsystems, and Wazuh sell professional SLAs, and local partners add on-site coverage. You separate the software cost (zero) from the support cost (your choice) — instead of paying for both, forever, bundled at the vendor's price.

"Open source is less secure because anyone can see the code."

Reality → The opposite is the industry consensus: public code means thousands of independent eyes, faster vulnerability disclosure, and no vendor deciding what you're allowed to know. The world's most attacked systems — the internet's DNS, encryption, and most of its servers — run on open source precisely because auditability builds trust. Closed source asks you to trust what you cannot inspect.

"It's hobbyist software — not for production."

Reality → Linux runs the majority of the world's servers, every Android phone, and virtually every stock exchange and cloud. Proxmox VE, XCP-ng, TrueNAS, and Ceph run in hundreds of thousands of production environments, including scientific computing clusters measured in petabytes. "Enterprise-grade" describes engineering discipline, not a license type.

"Nobody is accountable when something breaks."

Reality → Accountability comes from your support contract, not from the license. With a UAE-based SLA behind your deployment, you have a throat to choke — same as any vendor relationship. The difference: if your provider underperforms, you can replace them without replacing your platform. Try that with a proprietary stack.

"We'll need rare specialists we can't hire."

Reality → Open-source infrastructure runs on standard Linux skills — the single most common competency in the infrastructure job market, including the UAE's. Your team's existing knowledge transfers; nothing is locked behind a vendor certification paywall.

The honest trade-offs

A consultancy that only lists advantages is selling you something. Here is both columns — the cons are real, and they are exactly what a competent deployment partner exists to absorb.

Pros

  • No per-core or per-seat license fees — ever, at any scale
  • Full code auditability: essential for sovereignty and compliance
  • No forced upgrades, bundle changes, or end-of-life surprises on a vendor's schedule
  • Freedom to switch support providers without switching platforms
  • Costs scale with your support needs, not your hardware growth

Cons — stated plainly

  • You (or a partner) own operational responsibility — there is no single mega-vendor to outsource blame to
  • Fewer certified third-party integrations than the largest proprietary ecosystems
  • Polish varies between projects — choosing production-grade platforms requires expertise
  • Internal teams need onboarding time, or a support partner to bridge it
